13 Dead, 31 Injured In Tour Bus Crash In Desert Hot Springs
On Sunday, October 23, 2016 before sunrise a tour slammed into the back of a big rig on the 10 Freeway north of Palm Springs. The Riverside County Coroner’s office confirmed 13 people aboard the bus, including the driver, were killed and 31 passengers were seriously injured. The crash shut down the entire westbound 10 Freeway west of Indian Canyon Road.
The bus, owned by LA-based USA Holiday Bus, had departed the Red Earth Casino in Salton City. It was on its way back to Los Angeles when the collision was reported to CHP at 5:17 a.m. It appears that all passengers aboard had been asleep at the time of the impact.
The bus slammed into the back of the truck’s trailer, demolishing the front third of the cabin and shredding the back of the semi-truck. The cause of the accident is not immediately clear, but the tour bus was traveling much faster than the semi. Nevertheless, Federal and local investigators are working together to determine the cause of the collision.
